The main difference is that IPL uses a broad spectrum of light, while laser hair removal uses a specific wavelength of laser light to target pigment in the hair follicle.
Most patients need between 8-10 treatment sessions, usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart. While the exact number depends heavily on hair color, thickness, skin tone, treatment area and hormones. Maintenance: after the initial treatments, you may need occasional treatments—often 1–2 times per year, though this varies.
The reason you need multiple sessions is that laser works best on hairs in the active growth (anagen) phase. Not every hair is in that phase at the same time.
Some patients describe slight discomfort, you typically feel a quick snap or rubber-band-like sting with each pulse. The sensation varies by area! You may have redness or small bumps around the follicles afterward, which generally settle within a few hours. One advantage of Clarity is its integrated cooling, which helps make higher-energy treatments more comfortable and protects the skin.
- Shave the area 12–24 hours beforehand. Don't wax, tweeze, thread, or epilate for about 4 weeks before treatment, as the laser needs the hair root/follicle present. - Avoid tanning and sun exposure for roughly 2 weeks beforehand. Don't use tanning beds or intentionally tan. - Don't use self-tanner on the treatment area. Ideally stop several days before your appointment and make sure it's completely removed. - Arrive with clean, bare skin. Don't apply lotion, oil, deodorant, perfume, or makeup to the area immediately before treatment. - Avoid irritating products on the area for a few days beforehand, particularly strong exfoliants, retinoids, or acids if your clinic has advised you to avoid them. - Don't bleach the hair before treatment—the laser targets pigment in the hair. - Tell the clinic about medications and skincare products you're using, especially anything that can increase photosensitivity or affect healing.
Don't judge the treatment by how much hair you see in the first few days—the hair can appear to be growing normally before it sheds. - 1–2 weeks: Treated hairs begin to shed, sometimes looking like they're still growing. You may notice small hairs pushing out of the follicles. - 3–4 weeks: The treated area generally starts looking less hairy and smoother.
